Bangkok Unites for Earth Hour 2025: A Collective Stand Against Climate Change

On March 22, 2025, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, Bangkok will join millions worldwide in observing Earth Hour, a global environmental initiative organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This annual event encourages individuals, businesses, and landmarks to switch off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour, symbolizing a commitment to combating climate change and conserving natural resources.

Since 2008, Bangkok has actively participated in Earth Hour, collaborating with WWF Thailand and various environmental partners. Over the past 17 years, these efforts have collectively saved approximately 22,537 megawatts of electricity and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 12,272 tons. In the previous year alone, the city's participation led to a reduction in energy consumption by 24.65 megawatts, equating to grounding 92 flights between Bangkok and Chiang Mai or removing diesel cars from the road for 66,000 kilometers.

This year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is urging businesses, government agencies, and households to participate by turning off decorative lights, skyscraper signage, commercial billboards, and household illumination. Notably, five iconic landmarks will go dark during this hour: the Grand Palace (Wat Phra Kaew), Wat Arun Ratchawararam (Temple of Dawn), Rama VIII Bridge, the Giant Swing (Sao Chingcha), and the Golden Mount (Wat Saket Ratchaworamaha Vihara). Additionally, all 50 district offices and their respective local businesses have pledged to take part in this initiative.

Beyond the symbolic act of turning off lights, Earth Hour serves as a reminder of the collective power individuals and communities hold in addressing environmental challenges. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt emphasized that this initiative is not just about Bangkok but about Thailand and the world. He stated, "Every light turned off is a step towards a sustainable future." The BMA encourages residents to share their Earth Hour experiences on social media using hashtags like #EarthHour2025, #BiggestHourForEarth, and #MyHourForEarth to amplify the movement's reach and impact.

By participating in Earth Hour, Bangkokians have the opportunity to reflect on their energy consumption habits and consider adopting more sustainable practices in their daily lives. This collective action not only contributes to immediate energy savings but also fosters a culture of environmental mindfulness, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.
