BIMSTEC Leaders Convene in Bangkok to Enhance Regional Cooperation

On April 4, 2025, Bangkok hosted the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit, bringing together leaders from Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The summit focused on strengthening trade ties, improving transportation links, and enhancing disaster relief efforts, especially in light of the recent earthquake that affected Myanmar and Thailand

A significant outcome of the summit was the collective agreement to bolster disaster relief mechanisms, reflecting the region's commitment to collaborative responses in times of crisis.

The leaders also emphasized the importance of enhancing trade and transportation collaboration to foster economic growth and regional integration.

The summit also marked a diplomatic milestone with the attendance of Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. His participation was notable, given his exclusion from other regional meetings following the 2021 coup in Myanmar.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra engaged in bilateral discussions with Min Aung Hlaing, focusing on disaster relief and border security issues, including concerns over illegal trade and drug smuggling.

The event concluded with Thailand officially passing the BIMSTEC chairmanship to Bangladesh, signaling a continued commitment to regional cooperation and development.
